Who do I talk to if I decide I want to enroll?

Contact a Chickasha Regional Center instructor: Juliette Dalhed (Physics) or Michell Eike (Calculus)
Or you can complete and print the application available online at http://chweb.cvtech.org/application.html.

What classes do I need to take ahead of time if I want to attend OSSM?
The only pre-requisite courses are Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. Completion of Trigonometry is preferred, but not required.

What year during high school should I attend?

This is a one-year program, so it is traditionally designed for Seniors; but any high school student that has taken the pre-requisite courses is eligible to attend.

What are the benefits of attending OSSM?

  • Courses are free, which saves on college expenses
  • Students will be provided with a TI-89 graphing calculator to use throughout the school year (to be returned in May).
  • Students work and compete with other highly motivated and gifted students
  • OSSM is a nationally accredited academic program
  • Class sizes are small
  • Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment
  • Advantage of challenging college level courses while remaining at home school
  • Excellent college preparation
  • Improved ACT Score
      2008-2009 improvement:
      Average Incoming: 22
      Average Outgoing: 27

How can I fit OSSM into my schedule?

Students enrolled in the OSSM program will attend Canadian Valley Technology Center (Chickasha) as either a morning student (8 - 11 am) or as an afternoon student (12 - 3pm). Time will be spent equally between Calculus and Physics.

AP Calculus BC:
Students take Calculus I their first semester (Fall) and Calculus II during their second semester (Spring). The course provides calculus concepts presented analytically, graphically, numerically, and verbally. The course is taught at the collegiate level and includes limits, derivatives, integrals, series, and many other topics.

AP Physics C - Mechanics:
Students take General Physics during their first semester and Mechanics during their second semester. A fully equipped physics and computer lab will provide experiences and resources comparable to most universities in the area. General Physics is an algebra/trigonometry-based course. The curriculum includes motion in one dimension, Newton’s laws, work, energy, momentum, rotation of rigid bodies, fluids, and wave motion. Mechanics is a calculus-based course typical of what engineering majors take during their first year at a university.

Will I get college/Advanced Placement (AP) credit?
Our goal is for students to receive Advanced Placement credit for Calculus I, Calculus II, and Physics I by passing the AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C exams, allowing them to enter the university in Calculus III and Physics II or equivalent courses during their first semester of college.

Who else will be in the class and how big is the class?

Students from surrounding schools will be eligible to attend. Currently our surrounding schools are Alex, Amber - Pocassett, Anadarko, Apache, Bray - Doyle, Cement, Central High, Chickasha, Cyril, Elgin, Fletcher, Fort Cobb - Broxton, Gracemont, Marlow, Minco, Ninnekah, Rush Springs, Sterling, Tuttle, Union City, and Verden.

Class sizes are very small, less than 20 students, which is great for individual assistance.

How will I get there? Do I have to provide my own ride?

A bus will be provided for schools within the Canadian Valley school district (Alex, Am-Po, Chickasha, Ninnekah, and Tuttle). For schools outside the district, you will need to provide your own means of transportation.

I have an after-school job and play sports. Would I still have time to get the work done?

This program does come with homework, about 1 hour per night. The majority of our students are involved with sports (baseball, basketball, etc.) and/or have a job. These students learn a great deal about time managment by completing our program.

"Yes. There is a lot more work than what you would get at a typical high school, but it's not crazy. At first, it can be very stressful to balance everything, but after a while, you learn to manage your time. It's nothing for me to do an hour or so of homework, two hours of play rehearsal, and then go to work after that. If this is something you really want, and you would be willing to put in a little work, then these classes will be of the best that you will ever take."

"I play basketball and still have
time to do my homework.
There is a lot of work,
but it's worth it. It's really
preparing me for college
and my future."

"Although it might seem that
OSSM will be a lot of work, it is
a managable amount. I play two sports and have an after-school
job, and I always have time to complete the work. After a while,
it becomes part of a daily routine that you've made time for."
