The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) Chickasha Regional Center, along with Canadian Valley Technology Center, will host the first annual OSSM Extreme Challenge on Friday, March 26, 2010, at CVTC’s Chickasha campus. Students from local area schools, grades 7-12, with an interest in math and science, will compete in two of the three categories: Bridge Building, Catapult Launch, or Math Test. This event is geared to strengthen kids’ interest in math and science. Students will compete based on grade level in one of the three divisions: 7th & 8th Grade, 9th & 10th Grade, and 11th & 12th grade. First, second, and third place will be recognized in each division for each category.  Additionally, each school will compete to be named the most Extreme School, taking home a trophy. So bring your best and brightest to represent your school at this event!

Lunch will be a $4 box lunch that students can purchase from our Food Services in the Commons Area. This box lunch will include two pieces of pizza, a cookie, and a fountain drink.

Bridge Building
Each team of two students will be given the same amount of supplies that will remain unknown until the competition begins. Students will then use their problem-solving skills to build a bridge that will support the most weight. Scoring will be based on the amount of weight the bridge will support and the amount of time taken to complete the bridge.

Catapult Launch
Each team of two students will bring a homemade catapult to the competition that will be capable of launching ping pong balls into a target 10 feet away that will be at a 30° angle. The catapult must shoot only one ball at a time and should be readily reloadable in order to launch 20 balls within a 3 minute time-span. The dimensions of the catapult may not exceed 12in×12in×12in.
A catapult is not restricted to devices with lever-arms. The entire catapult must rest on the table during launches and must have a mechanical firing system (for example: trigger, switch, etc.). Any materials may be used in the construction of the catapult except rat traps, electronic devices, and
hazardous material.

Math Test
The test will be multiple-choice and all answers must be recorded on the provided answer document. Students will be tested over material that is appropriate for their grade level. There will be no calculator allowed.
