The program curriculum, in conjuntion with media support, provides an understanding of how daily operations are performed. Students are given instruction in small engines, lawn maintenance, greenhouse operations, and use of lawn and garden equipment. Students spend time in the are of lawn care and m aintenance by performing all of the lawn maintenance around the campus during the growing season.

The morning enrollment consists of twelve high school students and two adults. Twelve high school students and one adult are enrolled in the afternoon class.

COMMENDATIONS OR STRENGTHS

This program has always been a strong supporter of the SkillsUSA student organization, with students competing in leadership and skills contest. The organization of this program will permit students a clear road map as they move through the curriculum. Students will have opportunities to work on live projects around the campus by maintaining portions of the plants and lawn.

SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

All Program minimum standards were met.

GENERAL SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

STANDARD 6 Instructional Facilities

The following need to be addressed with the relocation of the existing program:

  • The greenhouse should be moved to the east side of the future Service Careers facility.
  • The curren math classes could be moved into the health building to open the future program space so that Service Careers students can abegin to work on the remodeling process.
  • The new building will need a commercial mop sink.
  • A hand-washing station needs to be installed in the laboratory area.
  • The current restroom needs to be installed in the laboratory area.
  • The current restroom needs to be updated by redoing the tile, repositioning the sink, and installing an enclosed stall around the toilet.
  • A window needs to be installed in the east wall of the new facility in order for the instructor to observe students who will be working in the grassed-in area outside the building.
  • A wind break needs to be installed outside the south entrance into the building to help eliminate the rush of air that comes into the building every time the door is opened. This area will later host the comptuers and the inflow of wind could affect their operations.
