PROGRAM EVALUATION SUMMARY

School: Canadian Valley Technology Center, El Reno
Program: Cosmetology
Chairperson: Janet Feken

INTRODUCTION

The Cosmetology program at Canadian Valley Technology Center, El Reno campus, is a two-instructor program offering 1050 clock hours of instruction. This is a new program and the studetns served include juniors from local high schools. Current enrollment is 23 morning students and 25 afternoon students. Class hours for the morning class are 8:30 until 11:15 a.m. and the afternoon class runs from 12:30 until 3:15 p.m.

COMMENDATIONS OR STRENGTHS

The classroom and lab area are arranged in an open layout that provides for good classroom management. The receptionist area is patterned similarly to reception areas in high-end salons. The program is well equipped in keeping up with current trends in the field of cosmetology. There is an abundance of storage space and plenty of lockers for the students. The manicure room has a separate ventilation system. The very large classroom has a "divider" wall that can be used to separate it into two classrooms. This will be beneficial next year because the teachers will ahve both juniors and seniors.

The program is instructionally well organized and the students will benefit by the team-teaching of the two instructors. Both teachers demonstrate a passion for their profession and for their students. They have a good working relationship and benefit from the expertise of each other.

The students will begin live work on clients in January and they will start job shadowing beginning next year. The instructors have alaso assembled an advisory committee with a diverse group of cosmetology representatives in the El Reno area.

All students are members of the SkillsUSA and are active in skills and leadership competitions. Through the student organization, the students are taught employability, leadership, and interpersonal skills that ensure success in the workplace.

SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

All applicable program minimum standards were met.

GENERAL SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

STANDARD 6 Instructional Facilities

A sink needs to be installed in the dispensary area. This would eliminate the need for students to walk across the room to use the sink to mix color, etc.
