PROGRAM EVALUATION SUMMARY

School: Canadian Valley Technology Center, Cowan Campus
Program: Health Careers
Chairperson: Lara Skaggs

INTRODUCTION

The Health Careers Certification program at Canadian Valley's Cowan Campus is a first-year, facilitator-led program that allows students to stay either a half or full day, depending on the pathway they choose and their rate of progress.

Instruction includes the core concepts of safety, communication, legal and ethical issues, medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology. Students have the opportunity to choose from individual career majors of Restorative Aide, Feeding Assistant, Advanced Unlicensed Assistant, Home Health Care, Certified Medication Aide, Medication Administration Technician, and
Nurse Assistant. Upon completion of the core, all students are eligible to sit for the National Health Science Foundation Standards assessment. All students participate in job-shadowing and clinical experience as part ofthe course.

The program serves both junior and senior secondary students and postsecondary adult students with a total enrollment of 32 total students. Of those, 10 are juniors and 21 are seniors participating part time. One adult attends the full day. College credit is available at Redlands Community College for three hours of medical terminology training.

COMMENDATIONS OR STRENGTHS

Many outstanding documents were provided for this accreditation visit by both the instructor and
administration, including an excellent strategic plan, organization chart, the application for workbased
learning, and a dynamic recrui1ment PowerPoint.

Evaluators commend the instructor for the amount of preparation done for the accreditation visit.
Everything was exceptionally well organized.

The classroom provides an outstanding learning enviromnent, with excellent storage facilities
available. Students are active participants in Oklahoma HOSA and have done an exemplary job
of running the chapter meetings.

SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

(These recommendations address Standard Not Met and should be implemented so that those program standards can be met.)

All Program minimum standards were met.

GENERAL SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

STANDARD 1 Instructional Planning and Organization

A program handbook should be developed to include admission information, cost/fees, uniform policy, classroom conduct and attire, all course syllabi, and an explanation ofthe grading scale--especially what "teacher discretion" means. The handbook should also define satisfactory progress of students and include information needed by adult students.

INSTRUCTOR RESPONSE TO RECOMMENDATION: The health careers student handbook was revised 2010-2011 with classroom and clinical objectives and requirements separated.

STANDARD 2 Instructional Materials Utilization

For individual learning activity packets (LAPs), a progression policy of 80 percent is required to
move to the next module. This is not addressed in the grading scale, but it should be. An overall
instructional plan, outlined on a regular calendar, should also be available for instructor and
student use.

STANDARD 4

Enrollment and Student/Teacher Ratio

A 1:15 teacher-to-student ratio is reco=ended for all student-centered classrooms. A pointbased
system for the selection/admission of students is also reco=ended.
The instructor should continue working with the Surgical Technology and Administrative
Medical Office instructors so the Health Careers students can articulate into one of the adult
health programs without repeating coursework.

STANDARD 5 Equipment and Supplies

When computers need to be replaced, the desktop computers could be replaced with a laptop
laboratory, which would free up ample room in the classroom for a variety of needs. In the
meantime, consideration should be given to reorganizing the room for better workflow.

STANDARD 8 Advisory Committee and Community Relations

The advisory committee roster should include each member's credential and contact information.

STANDARD 10

Coordination/Clinical Activities

Records should now refer to work-based experience as clinical experience. The term job should
be removed from all paperwork. The term "on-the-job" implies that the student will be paid for
the experience. Students in health careers should not be paid for their experiences due to liability
reasons for the school and clinical facility.

The clinical handbook should clarify the weighted grading system, and students should be graded
on the affective domain as well.

STANDARD 11 Student Accounting and Reports

Students should be strongly encouraged aod mentored to participate in Health Occupations
Students of America (HOSA) competitions.
